Spring has arrived, the trees have greened up, golden light falls across the land and a everyone has a spring to their step. At least that’s how it felt on Saturday for Tim & Lucy’s wedding at Hamswell House. Okay, the wedding wasn’t actually at Hamswell House, in fact it was at St Mary the Virgin in the small village of Marshfield, Gloucestershire. A beautiful part of the countryside on the outskirts of Bath close to their parents home.
I’d met Lucy previously at Johnny & Sarah’s wedding back in June 2009, where she was a bridesmaid. This was a fabulous wedding too, in fact one of my all time favourite wedding photos was taken that day, and graced the top spot of my homepage for years after. Well, fast forward to 2014 and it was Lucy’s turn to be the bride….and what a fun bride she was! Smiles, smiles and more smiles. A gift to any photographer. All day she looked at Tim lovingly, reacted to her friends with warmth and affection, yet had a calm that made photographing them as a couple a pleasure.
To script the ‘perfect’ wedding is to set yourself up for a fall, but this wedding had it all. Excellent weather, great friends, a beautiful church and a reception venue with an idillic countryside setting to match. Everyone was on Make-Up duty when I arrived.
So my wife asked me “did you lighten her eyes Matt?” Nope……them’s real. Great eyes huh?

A wedding morning is pretty much the only day you’ll be papp’d at every opportunity possible putting make-up on. The daily ritual thereafter will never be the same again.
One of my other favourite photos from the morning preps. Love the interaction and general busyness going on in it.
The dress goes on that one in a lifetime journey :-)
Why do I like this photo so much? I really don’t know. Maybe the lovely light, the calm serenity of the photo, the sense of anticipation……the tones? I don’t know, but I do rather like it.
So much happens in this 2 minute timeframe from the brides arrival in the a wedding car to getting to the alter. It offers an overload of emotions too. Lucy was however cool, calm and collected….but always smiling :-)

Yet another of my favourite photos from the day. Mum Mini & bridesmaid (Zoe, Sarah?….forgive me it’s been a week now and I’ve forgotten!). Anyway, how cool is Lucy’s mum btw. I’m glad Tim mentioned this in the speeches as I’ll be honest she wouldn’t look out of place as a bridesmaid….so what’s the secret to eternal youth?
Oh how I laughed when this was taken……quietly though obviously, so not to disturb the ceremony ;-)
It took ages for all the heads to align together at once for this photo…..but I knew they had to at some point if I waited patiently.

Hamswell House, perched perfectly overlooking the undulating Gloucestershire countryside.
There are great views from the gardens during the wedding reception at Hamswell House.
The inside of Hamswell House is presumably kept for the owners, with wedding guests utilising the marquee for the evening entertainment.
I love the way the cake details matched the colours in the blossom I photographed (below). Get me……alright, so I didn’t plan it :-(

I learnt early on when I took the first few frames of the day, that Lucy is a lady of many expressions. This has to be said, totally entertained me…..and was great as a photographer.
Hamswell House has fantastic gardens for photographing couples. This pergola creates some welcome dappled shade, and will no doubt look even more fabulous in a few weeks time as the flowers come fully into bloom.
You can’t beat an archway :-)
